Glimpse what could have been

What do you get when you mix Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot? Something like Discovery. Today we review their one and only album, LP. Yolo.

Before they made it big with their respective bands, Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot frontman Wes Miles worked together in a group they called Discovery. When you listen to their one album LP, you can hear elements of both groups fusing together: the eclectic, at times syncopated rhythms of Vampire Weekend and the breezy, bouncy tunes of Ra Ra Riot. The result is a wonderfully fun and animated album that leaves thousands wishing the duo could have produced more before moving onto their next gigs.

At the same time, would we want to sacrifice the later work of Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot for more Discovery? I suppose part of the poetic beauty of this album stems from the unresolved nature of that question. Still, this album gives fans of both bands a sense of what a collaboration between the two might sound like, and for that, we can all be thankful.
